Um Conto Americano segue a tradição de A Ratinha Valente apresentando uma fantástica trilha composta por James Horner. A principal música do filme, "Somewhere Out There”, conseguiu ganhar dois Grammy: Melhor Música do Ano e Melhor Música Feita Para Um Filme. O filme é um musical animado, por isso há um número bem maior de músicas. "Somewhere Out There" também ganhou uma nova versão, cantada por Linda Ronstadt e James Ingram, que inclusive ganhou um clipe músical, algo inédito para um filme de animação na época. O clipe estreou em 2# na Billiboard Hot 100.
